Week 5

I had never heard of the Sketch to Stretch strategy. Kids are told to sketch something real quick just to clarify and broaden their understanding of something new. I really liked our instructor's idea of how to use it a formative assessment tool - having the kids do it after parts of a read-aloud - to make sure they are making appropriate connections to the content.
Concept muraliing works as a way to show kids how to do something in the form of a visual representation. I want to use this in the class anytime it can help because I know many students will be visual learners, and for others, it will enhance or solidify their learning experiences.

Graphic Organizers I believe are used in most classrooms because they organize the information for students, helping them process new and older concepts or data, along with feelings about them.
We spoke about affective learning, which is one of the three domains of learning. The other two are cognitive and psychomotor. I do believe that the emotions are very much tied into our learning experiences because we usually learn with the whole self, whether we realize it or not. Everything connects. Hace you all seen any evidence of this in the classroom, postive or negative observations?

All of these are ideas that with enrich my lessons for my students, especially if I'm going to use read-alouds for them every day.
I have not started one lesson plan, but I do feel that my thoughts will come together when I start them because of the fact that we began with the Scope and Sequence this time. It's kinda weird to me but I like it. It's almost like we doing reverse lesson planning, or doing the process of the lesson plans backwards. It somewhat gives me more direction and clarity in approaching the task. What do you all think so far? (I ended up asking 2 questions this time.)

  1. I had never heard of the sketch to stretch strategy either but I love it!! I used a lot of graphic organizers in my unit plan, but while doing so it made me realize that organizers need to be used as scaffolding, and taken away once students "get the process."

  2. I had also never heard of the sketch to stretch strategy. I think it was a good idea. I love your concept murals. I think anytime you can visually represent an idea, the students will remember it better than just hearing.

  3. I too love the sketch to sketch strategy. Definitely something I want to do with my students someday! I am not sure if I have seen positive or negative observations of affective teaching in the classrooms I have been in. I do think its an important aspect to consider when writing your lesson plans, you want them to be engaged and motivated during the lesson. One of my biggest fears is I write what I think is a beautiful engaging lesson and it flops. I know it will happen and I will survive the experience I just hope I can handle it in the moment and then let it go. You know the withitness, mindfulness, and reflection?!

    I am down to finalizing my last 3 lesson plans. I had set a goal early in the session to start writing 1-2 lesson plans every week. I didn't get as started as early as I had hoped but I feel pretty good having as many as I have done. I also knew once my kids were out of school my "quiet" time would be very limited! lol!

  4. I have two plans left to write. I do feel like my unit came together easier than it may have if we had not done the scope and sequence.

    The sketch to sketch strategy was new to me and definitely something I could see myself implementing in my classroom someday. The idea of affective teaching was also new to me and I find it very interesting.
